Salkantay to Machu Picchu
For the next 6 days I will be somewhere between Cuzco, Peru, and Machu Picchu, walking on the Salkantay trek.
There are 12 people in our group. The youngest is around 19, the oldest is 51. Everyone is from Australia, England, and the USA. There is an extra horse for anyone who can't make it, hopefully that will not be Megan or me.
4:00am is coming very quickly.

good luck!
Hmmm...SO, two out of twelve. One horse. Davey: Let's check the Vegas odds on who rolls in on the horse! Not that I don't have the utmost faith in you both, but I CAN'T WAIT for May 20th!!
I made a couple of calls and got the following odds.
7-2 That Mike uses the horse due to a "toenail incident"
10-1 Megan rode the horse but only because "Everyone else did for a little bit"
Hey Batman and Boy wonder...your code is not that hard to crack...what are the odds on the horse not making it????
I hope that you are having some good, clear weather for views of Machu Piccu. I've enjoyed your photos...
Ok, so I rode the horse. It was really high altitude! But the poor horse was panting and heaving and I felt so sorry for him that after about five minutes I started walking again. But I didn“t vomit. Lots of people vomited.
glad you both made it safe! How hectic was the hike?
so if the horse was having a hard time, means I win.....in your face Batman and Boy Wonder....lol
so i'm reading this book called "Mao II" by Don DeLillo and one of the characters is a photographer and I read this line and thought of you. " No matter what I shot, how much horror, reality, misery, ruined bodies, bloody faces, it was all so fucking pretty in the end."
So!
We are back in Cuzco with the hike behind us. It was tough. Not all tough, but the first and last day were pretty hectic for me. The first day was some serious altitude over 4000 meters (13,123 ft) and it was a lot of ascent. I never rode the horse, wanted to, but did not. I did not vomit either. A few people in the group practically ran the entire trek, we only saw them at lunch and camp. Machu Picchu was tremendous. Many, many pictures to come sometime soon.
The Salkantay trek was pretty fantastic. Quite an experience. I'm not planning any serious hiking any time in the next 5 years.
Brad and Dave, you can never lay odds on me, shit, you can't even see me.
Benny, the first day was a KILLER.
Sarah Beth. Yeah, Don always has photographers in his books. Usually they are based on photographers from the Magnum Photos agency, who have chronicled a lot of war and misery since 1925. How have you been?
Damn! My money was on the horse riding Mikey. I always lose!
Brad, you do it with your horse!
haha who says do it anymore
Machu Picchu Greaser!!
wow. this all went downhill rather quickly didn't it? i'm only drinking hater-ade cuz i didn't get in on the fun sooner!
glad you guys are well. great quote from above.
Dia,
