Okay, so maybe it was not "near death" afterall...

but it was certainly fascinating. 14 travelers from all over the world chartered a 52ft Finnish sailboat captained by a cool Dane and his lovely Venezuelan 1st mate. We left the small port of Portobelo, Panama for Cartagena, Colombia smiling and bright, well fed and with no idea of what to really expect. To read about what went down over the course of those 5 days check out Megan's travelogue.

Looking back, I would not trade this experience for anything. We met some great people, and learned a little about the sailing life as well.

Mike, if you get eaten by a shark, I will totally kill you. That sailboat stuff was intense but not as shocking as Megan's ability to sleep anywhere. SHOCKING. I miss you tons. Please continue to not get killed.
Love,
Mel

Mike, I'm concerned that you are not eating enough tofu . . . it must be terrible having to rely on fresh fish. Shall I express mail you something bean-curdy and tempting?

For real though, your life right now sounds like the right kind of life. Congratulations.

Love,

Catherine

See the comments about sea sick on Megans site....you remember to duck when you see your Mom face to face--the last thing she said was attach yourself to the life vests..don't worry about the sharks....your Mom is more dangerous...by the way thanks for upsetting her and I have take the punishment...

HA! You know, reading Megan's blog, I'm very aware that the photo's don't go with the story! I think we're going to need a special guest written story from Mikey on her page, telling us what else happened on the boat trip. All I got was a view of the cabin!

the truth is, while we were sailing, i was in bed as well. The sea was so rough, I was sick a lot. With 14 other passengers there is not a lot of space on deck, so I would retire to bed, where laying on my back would provide total relief from the sea sickness. One day I pretty much laid down for 24 hours. I never really slept, it was sort of a dazed out trance. The boat was rocking and rolling too much to sleep.
