Books

So far on this trip I have read:

Pimp by Iceberg Slim
I, Rigoberta Menchu. An Indian Woman in Guatemala
Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs
Air America by Christopher Robbins
Serpico by Peter Maas
The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger
The Thong Also Rises edited by Jen Leo (including a story by Megan Lyles)

Isla de Mexcaltitan

We spent a few days on a tiny oval shaped island called Mexcaltitan in the state of Nayarit, Mexico. A little more than 1000 people live there and most of them either are fishermen, or work directly in the fishing business. Seriously, there was shrimp and fish everywhere. During the day people would lay out their catches on the sidewalk so they could dry them out in the sun. Everyone was very laid back and nobody seemed to be in a hurry to do anything but chill, and go fishing. There is not a single car on the island, one hotel, and there is no police force. During the rainy season the lagoon rises and the streets fill with water. Small boats and canoes are used to get around, similiar to Venice. Everyone was very friendly and open. People would play a variety of games at night consisting of different marble games, soccor, dominoes, and a game only the women played called lotteria. In order to get to the little ancient island you have to take a combi from Santiago Ixcuintla to La Bantanga. From there you catch a collectivo lancha (small boat with an outboard motor) and it will take you through the mangroves to Mexcaltitan.

Mazatlan...

is for suckers. What a hole that place is! Seriously I hate it and I will forever curse it and talk bad about it. Mazatlan just made my list of top 5 places that I will always hate. It is tied for 1st with Maryland. If you want better details on why Mazatlan sucks watch out for Megan“s blog entry, I do not want to waste any more bandwidth on it.

Im done with tourist resort towns.

So now we are in a cool little town named Santiago Ixquintla on our way to a even smaller little town which I cannot spell and will not attempt to spell at this time. I have not picked up the camera in days because Mazatlan was a hole and we had cable in our room thanks to Megan sweet talking the guy at the desk.

Mexico

Well, so far so good. Nobody has been sick and everyone has been super nice to us. We have worked on two stories one being the worlds largest, and purest salt production facility, and today we paid a visit to a pearl farm. The pearl farm was great and I will have some images up in a few days. We have been staying in Guaymas, Mexico for the past few days in a great little hotel named Martha for about $10.00 USD a day. Megan rocks with the Spanish, Im so blown away at how good she is. She was very modest before we crossed the border, but she has some skills. Tomorrow we head to Mazatlan. We realized that we really need to start to put some distance under our feet or we will spend our whole year in Mexico, which is not bad, but we have so much more to see. I have been slaughtering Megan in our year long Rummy tournament, but anything can happen. I think it is safe to say that so far we love Mexico. Soooo much more to come.

Goodbye Baja!

We left Baja for the mainland of Mexico. It took a 9 hour ferry ride to get across The Sea of Cortes and to arrive at Guaymas, Mexico. We caught this sunset over Baja as we left.

Tijuana Hotel Room

We got here late last night, and booked ourselves a seedy Tijuana hotel room. This place is like Mrytle Beach on steroids. I wish we had time to get off the main strip and see where the real people live and spend time, but we are off to Guerrero Negro in the morning. The ride will be 12 hours long. The thing I will remember the most about Tijuana is the really good tacos, and $1.00 beers.

Me, Brad Walker, and the Cowboy.

At the Anaheim Greyhound Station, on our way to Tijuana.
